Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei, shared his thoughts on the hypothetical state of the mobile communications market in 2022 if the US hadn’t imposed sanctions against Huawei.
Richard Yu stated, “Had it been for US interference and suppression of Huawei,” and also attacked Samsung. He said, “The rest are small manufacturers including the South Korean company Samsung whose smartphones can mainly be sold in the US and South Korea.”
It is odd to classify Samsung as a small manufacturer, considering that Huawei has spent many years trying to catch up to the South Korean company. After the US sanctions, Huawei quickly lost ground to Samsung.
Due to its excellent sales in China, Huawei took 2% of the smartphone market share from Samsung and held 19% of the global smartphone market. Due to the weak Galaxy S20 sales, Samsung’s share of the global smartphone market was only 17%.
But history is not for the subjunctive mood. There can’t be an “if only.”
