Apple will launch an AR/VR headset of a second generation in the first half 2025. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, an insider, stated that the headset will be equipped with more powerful hardware. He estimates that the new item supply could reach 10 million units by 2025-26.
The company hasn’t yet presented the first version of its headset. Kuo said that the headset will be displayed at an event in January 2023. It will cost approximately $ 3,000.
The first version of this headset will also receive micro-OLED displays from Samsung Display. Apple reached out to the South Korean company. Samsung Display has previously resisted the release of panels using this technology because of the low demand. However, micro-OLED display technology could become the main technology for AR/VR headsets.
These displays are not built on a glass substrate but instead on a chip. This allows them to be smaller and more thin. It is possible to make pixels as small as 4-20 micrometers, as opposed to 40-300 micrometers for standard OLED panels. The response time is also improved.
Rumours suggest that Apple’s AR/VR headset will have at least two displays. Two of these displays could be micro-OLED at up to 4K resolution and 3,000 pixels per square inch. LG Display could also be a potential display supplier.
