Japan and the United States plan to open a new research-and-development center for next-generation 2nm chip development. The Chip Research Institute will create it in collaboration with the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Natural Sciences (Riken). The US National Center for Semiconductor Technology will provide technical support. There will also be specialists.
The development of technologies to produce 2-nanometer semiconductors is a goal of several countries. This will increase chip performance and reduce power consumption. In 2025, mass production is expected to begin for these chips. These issues will be addressed at the 2+2 meeting today.
This will decrease Taiwan’s dependence, which is home to approximately 90% of the world’s semiconductor manufacturing capacity. This will allow Japan and the United States both to expand their production.
The Japanese government allocated up to 92.9 billion Japanese yen (about $700 millions) last Monday to support the production of semiconductor products. The project will cost 600 billion yen (4.4 trillion dollars) in total. The Japanese Kioxia and American Western Digital Corporation are creating the plant, which will produce memory for unmanned data processing centers.
