Richard Mille and Ferrari have teamed up to create the thinnest mechanical watches in the world. It costs many times more than the supercars of the Italian brand.
The model with the simple name RM UP-01 Ferrari is 1.888 million USD. These watches are limited to 150 copies.
The watch’s main feature is its 1.75mm thickness. It’s true that it is only 0.05mm thinner then the Bulgari Octo finissimo Ultra record holder. However, it’s still a very thin device. The watch mechanism’s thickness is 1.18mm. Watches are made mostly of titanium, with some aluminum and vanadium inclusions. Richard Mille claims that the novelty took over 6,000 man-hours.
The RM UP-01 was developed in collaboration with Ferrari. It is the culmination of years of hard work, dozens upon prototypes, and more than 6,000 hours of laboratory testing and development. A traditional watch mechanism with tiered gears or hands was not possible due to the thinness of the watch. Richard Mille realized that it was impossible to place all components on a larger board. He decided to distribute them so that they create a perfect synergy between movement and case, each providing strength and rigidity. To ensure shock resistance, we wanted to preserve the old architecture in which the mechanism is assembled in an enclosure and not in such an assembly where the back cover copies the board.
The watch is ultra-thin, allowing it to resist water up to 10 meters and withstand accelerations up to 5500 g.
