Rumours that French satellite operator Eutelsat is planning to merge with British OneWeb are confirmed. Eutelsat has announced the merger.
The message states that Eutelsat Communications, OneWeb’s key shareholders, and key executives sign a Memorandum Of Understanding to Make OneWeb a Global Leader in Satellite Communications. Eutelsat’s 36 geostationary satellites will be combined with 648 OneWeb satellites located in low Earth orbit (of which 428 are currently in orbit). The combined operator will thus have 684 satellites available.
Bundling European satellite Internet operators will enable them to compete better with the Starlink network operated by SpaceX and the Amazon Project Kuiper satellite programs.
