TikTok Music could be the next competitor for Apple Music or Spotify. ByteDance is TikTok’s parent company and has filed a trademark application to protect its music streaming service.
TikTok is a social media platform that has established itself as the best and most widely used video app on Android, iOS and Android. However, the company is now looking to expand to other industries. The Chinese ByteDace (parent company of TikTok) filed a trademark application with the USPTO in May.
Business Insider reports that the request for an app called TikTokMusic is to allow users to “buy, play, download and download, recommend, rate, share playlists and lyrics, take photos and edit playlist covers. They can also comment on music, songs, and albums.”
TikTok plans to compete with Spotify and Apple by creating its own music app
TikTok is yet to announce anything, but it seems like the best evolution for an app that already has one of the largest collections of songs and artists in the world. This is not the first time that Spotify alternatives have been mentioned.
Although there was some speculation in 2019, the company did not officially announce anything. TikTok’s arrival on the music market could be dangerous for Spotify or Apple Music. TikTok is the only app not produced by Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and has over three billion downloads globally. ByteDance described the service as an advertising service, possibly suggesting there will be an advertisement-supported option similar to the free Spotify tier.
